how long is it typically before you have to change the filter. I have a DE filter and usually backwash every 2-3 months.

If you size the new filter with a similar capacity, it should need to be cleaned at a similar frequency, or if you get more capacity it should need less frequent cleaning. The cartridges themselves just get washed off and re-used, so if you treat them right they last for years.
