Please also remember that when you measure the chlorine in the pool, you are only detecting the leftover, unneeded amount of "free chlorine" in the water. This is not the same as detecting whether or not the system is generating. If you have low or no chlorine levels, make sure that your chlorine generator is set to 100% and running 24 hours a day until the situation changes. The guide will also go over many common situations that can cause extremely high chlorine demand, which is the other side of the equation - meaning that if chlorine is being consumed faster than it is replenished, you will have no free chlorine even though chlorine is being generated normally. In that case you have to address cause of the chlorine demand.
