With a 55,000 gallon pool, you will need to install two systems. The general rule of thumb is that you should select a chlorination system that has a manufacturer's capacity rating of 1.5-2 times the pool volume or higher. For your pool, that would mean 82-110,000 gallons. If you live in the southern states or the sunbelt, you need the 2x sizing, but in more temperate areas 1.5x is acceptable. Note that for different models, the output capacity (in pounds of chlorine) will vary for similar capacity ratings. More capacity is always better as it will handle weather events and peak demand better and will also extend cell life.
