Salt chlorinators such as the RJ measure the water's salinity by reading the conductivity of the water. Measuring salinity electronically like this can vary, especially if you are comparing it to a salinity test take by another digital test meter. Additionally, the RJ will report to you the average salinity level (displayed when you press the "salinity" button) in addition to the real-time salinity reading (displayed when you press the menu button and scroll through the diagnostics). It would be normal to have variations between these two numbers as well.
It is most meaningful to compare any digital salinity reading to titration-based salinity tests ("drops" test kit), which provides a chemically accurate reading. If your salt chlorinator is reading a salinity level significantly lower than titration-based salinity tests, this may occur when mineral scaling is building up inside of the salt cell. This can be occurring, but not yet at a quantity that would trigger a system's warning light. It is typical that after cleaning a salt cell, its controller will begin to read a higher salinity than it did before cleaning.
