No, there is not necessarily a flow direction on the Universal-series cells, in terms of the water flowing from left-to-right or right-to-left through the cell. The standard installation is for the cells to be oriented with the cable connection pointing upwards; however, the manual specifies that if you have a variable-speed pump and have it programmed for low flow operation, you should consider orienting the cell so the side with the cable connection is pointing downwards, to prevent air from accumulating and getting trapped inside during low flow operation.
