For the RJ+ Series, follow the instructions in the owner’s manual: mix 4 parts water with 1 part muriatic acid and soak the cell for approximately 15 minutes. Always add the acid to the water—never add water to acid.
Yes, standard pool-grade muriatic acid containing approximately 31.45% hydrochloric acid is suitable for this mixture.
Weaker solution may simply require a longer soak or be more likely to need multiple back-to-back cleanings to achieve the same cleaning effectiveness, but might still be sufficient for lighter scaling. It is recommend to follow the model-specific manual rather than cleaning stand instructions, particularly when using full-strength 31.45% muriatic acid.
After cleaning the cell:
- Remove and thoroughly rinse the cell.
- Look between the plates for remaining mineral deposits.
- Flush away any deposits that have softened or loosened.
- If substantial scaling remains, or if a warning light occurs again soon after cleaning, repeat the process with freshly mixed cleaning solution.
If the cell develops heavy scale or requires frequent cleaning, the underlying issue is usually the water’s Saturation Index, also called LSI. Even when the individual chemistry readings appear to be within their normal ranges, their combined balance can promote rapid calcium scaling.
